Union Berlin snatch stoppage time leveller to break Augsburg hearts
Going into the game only two points clear of the relegation zone, Augsburg looked nervous in possession throughout the first half and struggled to create in the final third.
The visitors looked to take advantage of that on multiple occasions throughout the half, with the pace of Oliver Burke looking particularly threatening on the break.
The Scotsman created the first major chance of the game as his cross was perfectly placed for the late run of Andras Schafer, but he headed the ball straight into the ground, and it looped safely over Finn Dahmen’s bar.
The home goalkeeper was then called into action moments later when Jeong Woo-Yeong took aim from the edge of the area, but it was hit straight at Dahmen.
Burke then had the best chance of the half on 28 minutes as he flashed his pace to run through on goal, but he lost his composure and smacked the ball well wide of the near post.
A protest from the home fans on the half-hour mark stunted the momentum of the game and resulted in six minutes of first-half added time, and they were rewarded with a moment of magic.
The hosts had shown nothing in attack for the whole half, but Alexis Claude-Maurice scored a goal-of-the-season contender with a swinging, dipping effort from 35 yards, which kissed the crossbar on its way past Frederik Ronnow.
Claude-Maurice came close to doubling the lead just before the hour mark as his free-kick from the edge of the area beat Rønnow but cracked the outside of the post before bouncing clear.
A bigger chance came moments later when a swift counterattack gave Anton Kade time and space 10 yards from goal, but his low shot was superbly saved by the Union goalkeeper.
As the visitors threw everyone forward, they were caught out at the other end as Derrick Kohn kicked Samuel Essende in the face whilst attempting a last-ditch piece of defending, resulting in a straight red card. Despite that setback, there was time for a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time as Marin Ljubicic reacted first to divert Andrej Ilić’s shot into the net from close range.
Although Augsburg extended their unbeaten home run to four games, they sit only three points clear of the drop zone and remain in 15th spot.
Union Berlin still has a chance of European football next season, and move within six points of the top six, albeit having played a game more.
